Memories of Michael Armstrong FB

I first joined the 1st Skegby (St.Andrews) Scout Troop when I was about 10 years old around 1947.
We used to meet in a small outhouse adjoining the garage of the old vicarage. The vicar at that time was Mr Smith.
The scoutmaster was Mr.Gascoigne, the then headmaster of Skegby School. He eventually gave it up through lack of time
and in due course, Geoff Tansley, a local school teacher was the leader for a while until he obtained a teaching position away from Skegby.
I was 15 when what was left of the troop disbanded (c1952). At this time I was determined to form a cub scout pack when I was old enough.
This I did when as soon as I was 18. Firstly we used to meet in same place as we did whilst in the scouts.
Our cub's parents committee raised enough money to buy the Social Services building in the old quarry but as it wasn't really fit to be used
in the state it was in, we used to meet in the newly built church hall.
A Scout troop was eventually reformed and run by Alf Harrison & Geoff Kemp with Ray Matthews as Group Scoutmaster.
There was also a thrivinging Girl Guide Group run by Janice Georgre.

First Baden-Powell Challenge Awards have been presented to Jess Ross, Lucy Peake and Piper Owen.
This is the highest a guide can achieve and calls for sustained effort over a period of time,
with girls required to complete ten specific challenges plus a residential event.
Pam Peake, group guide leader, said "When Jess, Lucy and Piper realised they would be the very first Skegby Guides to gain their Baden-Powell Awards, they lept at the chance.
They've all worked very hard and I'm proud to say they returned from their residential adventure with a whole new drive and maturity."

Also celebrating were Grace Fleet, Millie Fowler and Noa Arapi, who fast-tracked through the Guide Gold scheme in order to complete it before they transfer to Ashfield Rangers
Several other Skegby Guides are currently working on their Gold Awards.

Skegby Guides Put First Aid Into Practice

Two members of Skegby Guides have been presented with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire's "Celtic Cross",
a special award given to recognise their exceptional bravery and quick thinking in a scary situation.
In November 2017, Georgia (12) and Abigail (12) were amongst girls from Skegby Guides who took part
in a First Air Course, little realising that their skills would soon be called upon in an emergency.
But when they were walking home from school one day last year, a girl nearby suddenly collapsed and appeared to be having a seizure.
Georgia and Abigail immediately ran to help.
They established a safe space around the girl, put her into the recovery position,
cleared her airway and stayed with her until adult help arrived.
