aka The Clubby  Photograph provided by George Watson FB It originally had its origins in the library that was created at the front of the High Street near Springwood Terrace. Later the house was built to house a Reading Room and also a Gaming Area t0 finance the Adult Education of the Mineworkers, hence the name "progressive". At the side of the Co-op, a Barrack Hall was brought that served, in conjunction with the Progressive Club as an Educational Class and Lecture Hall, in fact a number of lectures by some notoriously gifted people were held there including Frank Worsley, the Navigator for the Shackleton Expedition. So Stanton Hill in those days was an Education Centre and thats how the Progressive Club got its name. |
